Recently in South Carolina, a police officer was called into a classroom when a disruptive student was being noncompliant. The initial confrontation was from the student being on her cellphone and refusing to put it away. With her not putting the phone away, the officer was called to the room to take her out. According to the student, the officer grabbed her by the arm and wrapped his arm around her neck.
In the video, you can see the deputy put his hands on the student. Then suddenly he lifts her, and her desk in a attempt to remove her from the classroom. Some say that the blame rests solely on the officer, while others say that there are wrong doings on both sides. The sheriff said to CNN’s Anderson Cooper “There is no justification for some of his actions”. From this quote it is possible to think that the deputy’s mistake was force that outweighed the necessity.
Stories like these make people wonder if cops are really there to serve and protect but the fact of the matter is that there is a lot of good men and women in law enforcement doing a tough job. Actions taken in a matter of seconds, are criticized and gone over for weeks and weeks. But it seems like when an officer of the law does something good, it doesn’t get enough publicity unlike the bad stories.
One of the most heartwarming stories that I found was about a Michigan police officer. He pulled over a woman and found something missing. In the back seat there was a young girl who was in need of a booster seat for safety. Instead of giving the mother a ticket. He instead bought her a booster seat. When interviewed the officer only said “It was the easiest 50 bucks I ever spent,” said Officer Hall. “It’s something that anybody in the same position, in our position would do…I in no way, shape or form expect to be paid back. It is a ‘pay it forward’ situation completely.” image
So it is important to keep in mind when you see a viral news article that there are officers who do an outstanding job in dire circumstances.
