Sometimes it doesn’t pay to take the easy route, as Taylor Swift kindly demonstrated in her hit song shake it off. It is claimed by an R&B rapper Jessie Braham that her lyrics in the chorus of Shake It Off were plagiarized, and he wants to sue her for 42 Million dollars.

The chorus of “Shake it Off” is the suspected act of plagiarism. In actuality the two songs have nothing in common other than phrases that can’t be copyrighted. Swift’s lyrics goes as follows.
“Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate
Baby, I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake it off, I shake it off
Heart-breakers gonna break, break, break, break, break
And the fakers gonna fake, fake, fake, fake, fake
Baby, I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake it off, I shake it off” -Taylor Swift “Shake it Off”

While Braham’s chorus just goes
“Haters gone hate
playas gone play
Watch out for them fakers they’ll fake you everyday”

Other than that the two songs have no similarities. With all that being said, Braham still feels as though with out his song there would be no Shake it Off.

The original demands for compensation from Braham were very non ambitious. He wanted only a selfie with Taylor Swift, and writing credit. When Swift denied his request, Braham felt that a law suit was in order. He is now suing Taylor Swift for 42 Million dollars.

The lawsuit doesn’t look like it will end in favor of Braham, but at what point does creative imitation, and lack of innovation become plagiarism? One notable similarity in many of the popular songs that are around, are the lack of difference in the way the songs are played. The melody of the songs have chords which are made up of three or more notes that have some sort of harmony. Now, the style in which the chords are played may differ, but many of the chords are the same.

An Australian comedy group made a song with Four chords that contained accurate covers of 73 songs. Most of these songs are very popular titles such as; “Don’t Stop Believing”, and “Forever Young”, and many many many others. You can find the video here.

So at the end of the day. Some of the most popular songs ever to be heard are not original thoughts. A hard truth about creativity the original creator is not always the most recognized, and there inevitably will be copycats who make more from the original idea
