The reason why you have to go to college in order to become an interior designer is so you can get the knowledge of these important things: you have to know the history of design, the structural integrity of the buildings that you are going to be working in, you have to know the building codes and keep yourself updated on them every year, ergonomics, spatial concepts, ethics, and computer aid drawing.
There is a lot of competition in the interior design field, but the most important thing that you can do is to get noticed and to put your name out their to as many people as possible. You must know how to how to plan a room for the client and if their not 100% about what they want to do draw a 3D picture on a iPad or another piece of technology. You must also have an excellent time and project management skills because if you are accurate with the time line that you gave your client and did excellent with the project at hand than there is a great possibility that person will want you to come back or tell other people about your work.
